Roo’s Footy Update

To our Roos Family

Well, we’re almost there, and I can’t tell you how happy we are as a Club to still be involved at the pointy end of the season! Following on from the fantastic weekend prior, a massive Roo’s contingent headed to Glenelg Oval on Friday night, hoping to turnaround a disappointing loss to Walkerville 2 weeks prior – and we weren’t let down by the boys!

Having been lucky enough to be privy to the extra sessions and behind the scenes preparation that went into the game by the players, coaches and support staff, one couldn’t feel anything other than confident that no stone had been left unturned in preparation for the do-or-die final. And to their credit, the boys went out and executed the plan beautifully.

So now for the big one. 2 hours of footy at St Marys will decide whether or not we have broken our 31 year-old Men’s A-Grade premiership drought. With almost a full squad to choose from, there is no reason this can’t happen if they plan, prepare and play as they did on Friday night.

With the game being played at Kenilworth’s oval, where cars are allowed to park all around the oval, it should provide a great, county footy style atmosphere so we now just need as many of our Roo’s extended family to get there and be as loud as possible to get the boys home.

In other great results on the weekend, our U/12’s played a magnificent game of junior footy to knock off Brighton at Brighton. The boys were up and about early in the game and stuck to task, playing some of the best junior footy that I, and many others around us have seen in a long time. It’s a credit to Rod, his support staff and players on the effort – now like the seniors, they just have to finish off a great year by knocking off PHOS at the Bay Oval this Sunday morning to also claim the big prize! Again, let’s get out there in force to watch and cheer them on!

Our U/17.5 girls had a crushing win at home yesterday against Flinders Park/Portland. Having gone winless in 2020, it’s been nothing short of a sensational turn-around by Ben, his crew and the girls who are playing with such passion and enjoyment. This not only stands them in good stead for the final 2 weeks of this season, it’s also very exciting when you think of the pathway ahead of them at the Roo’s and then hopefully on even bigger and better things at the highest levels in the coming years. But first of all, SMOSH at SMOSH on Sunday, then hopefully another team playing off in another GF the following week.

Finally, our U/17’s boys, who lost their first final on Sunday. With a few boys unavailable yesterday and most of the year due to SANFL junior duties, it was always going to be a challenge for the boys, but they gave it a red-hot crack before eventually being worn down by TTG. Coached by a number of our senior men players, the boys have really continued to develop this year under their tutelage so we hope that now a number of the boys are ready to step up into our senior ranks next year and remain in the Roo’s strips for many years to come.

In closing, I’m putting it out there…The Roo’s have by far the most loyal and vocal supporters of any local Club in my opinion, so that support can really go a long way in getting our teams over the line this weekend!

So yes, I do finish off with this every week but this week we, as a Club, can really do with YOUR support, so whether you’re a regular, or a Past Player from yester-year, we would we sincerely love to SEE YOU AT THE FOOTY, and let’s show them what we’re all about!

A Grade – Preliminary Final
Having worked hard all year to earn a Preliminary Final spot, we went into this game confident and determined to perform at our optimum level in what was such a high stakes game – that being the right to be promoted up a division and to earn a grand final spot. We put a lot of work into our match ups and game day strategy. To everyone’s credit, we executed a perfect 4 quarters of football. We denied the opposition uncontested ball and didn’t allow them to run and spread. Our stoppage and inside work was excellent, our defense strong and our forwards worked really hard with excellent offensive and defensive actions and smart running patterns. It’s so rewarding to see it all come together under such a high pressure environment – credit to everyone involved. We have trained for this all year and now have the opportunity to achieve something really special – not just for the playing group but also for our entire squad of players across all grades, our support staff, past players, sponsors, supporters, family and friends. Winning a premiership is going to mean so much to a lot of people. We are determined to bring this home – our first flag in 31 years. Look forward to seeing you all at the game and thank you to everyone for the tremendous support and well wishes.
