ROO’s Footy Update

To our Roos Family

Well, that’s a wrap! Another season done and dusted – and what a fantastic season it was for our great Club!

This time last week we had 2 Premierships in the cupboard, thanks to the senior Women’s great wins, wins that cement us in as the most successful Amateur League Club in SA, a fact we are very proud of! On Sunday, U/17.5 girls played off in the Preliminary final and unfortunately didn’t come away with the win, but with the improvement the girls have made this year under their (Super) Coach, Ben Taylor, augurs well for the future of our women’s program.

Fast forward a week and the boys stepped up to the plate. In front of a large pro-Roos crowd, the A-Grade broke a 31 year-old Premiership drought by knocking off SMOSH at Kenilworth Oval. Yes, it was a long time coming, but the elation seen on many faces after the game made it a very satisfying and memorable win for may who have waited a long time for it – myself included! It’s like a monkey has been taken off the A-Grade’s back, so we now look forward to stepping up to Div 3 and giving it one helluva crack once again.

Then on Sunday morning, our future stars of the Roos U12, topped off a great couple of weekend of footy, and a great season for themselves, by toppling PHOS Camden at Glenelg Oval. Down at half time, Rod had his boys fired up for the second half and they went out and got the result they all so thoroughly deserved. We hope this is a small stepping stone in the future of our junior program at the Roo’s as we implement a number of positive changes moving forward to try and boost team numbers and player participation. Stay tuned for more news on this front over the coming weeks.

So, in closing for the last time this season, there’s simply not enough room here to thank each person individually for their efforts this season, but I will make sure I do so in person. What I do want to do is thank EVERYONE who has played a part in achieving what we did this year – Morphettville Park Football Club is a Club that is well and truly back on the map and in the headlines for all the right reasons, so we need to make the most of our success this year, ride the wave and get others on board for the ride as well.

I do unapologetically make one exception to my rule though. I couldn’t do what I do without the unconditional support from my magnificent family who allow me to do what is required for the place they all know I feel so passionately about. So, to Brenda (who does so much of the leg work and countless hours behind the scenes – and is the world’s best P.A!), to Jaimey & Tayla, who know and understand (well, most of the time!), that family time is often restricted during the season with Club commitments, I THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

To our Roo’s family, it’s been my absolute honour to be the President of your Club. It’s a position and privilege that I don’t take lightly, and I am so proud to be a Roo, surrounded by so many fantastic people from all walks of like. WE ARE MORPHY PARKS, and we are one big family.

So don’t be strangers – the Club is open all Summer and before you know it, pre-season training will be back.

Stay safe!

A Grade – Grand Final
After a comprehensive Preliminary Final win, we went into the Grand Final confident yet cautious that we will need to bring our best efforts to break a long awaited 31 year premiership drought.

It was quite a long week full of anxiety and excitement but on game day, the boys arrived at the game in an excellent frame of mind and clear in their thoughts. It was a classic grand final.

The pressure went to another level and the first quarter was a genuine arm wrestle. Both sides had come to play. Staying composed, we gained the upper hand through relentless attacking and pressure on the opposition. Our forward entries were purposeful and we were kicking the ball deep into dangerous positions. Our accuracy in front of goals was outstanding which left us with a handy lead at half time. To the credit of the opposition, they hit back hard and we found ourselves making some poor decisions by hand and foot due to the intense pressure and our poor field positioning. With the game in the balance at three quarter time, I was confident that we would regroup, regain our composure and finish the game full of running due to our superior fitness and ability.

After the opposition kicked the first goal of the quarter to get within 7 points, we elevated our intensity and will to win by kicking the final 5 goals of the game to win it by 36 points. The jubilation and euphoria that followed was something many of us will never forget. After 31 long years….the elusive A-Grade premiership drought at the Morphettville Park Football Club was over.

I am so proud and honored to be given the opportunity to coach such a wonderful football club and an outstanding group of men. A sincere thank you to everyone – our entire playing squad across all grades, the assistant coaches, the support and training staff, our families, supporters, sponsors, volunteers, past players, officials and friends. This premiership meant so much to so many.

U12 – Grand Final
Our amazing Under 12 team fought there way from a 3 win season in 2020, to four wins from our first four games in Division 3 this year, to nominating to be in Division 2.  I don’t think anyone could have predicted how our boys dedication to our pillars of sportsmanship, respect and trying our hardest could take us.  In horrible conditions in our Grand Final at Glenelg Oval we slipped behind to be down at half time by 9 points.

Our little champions rallied in the face of adversity and outscored PHOS 3.3 to 0.5 in the second half to win Morphy Roos our first ever Under 12 Premiership.  Our players were so pumped after the game and we are so grateful as a team to now have a Premiership beside our name.  Congratulations to our amazing players who were relentless in their premiership pursuit to win for our club, each other and everyone who cares about us.
